So God Made a Mother

On the sixth day,
God looked down on his planned paradise
and said, "I need a caretaker."
So God made a mother.

God said, "I need someone willing
to get up before dawn,
cook breakfast, clean the house,
work all day in the kitchen,
cook supper, then stay up past midnight,
tending to a child with a fever."
So God made a mother.

"I need someone with arms
strong enough to carry,
yet gentle enough to cradle a baby to sleep,
someone who will mend the broken hearts,
patch up the scraped knees,
and still find time to listen and understand."
So God made a mother.

God needed someone to teach a child
to tie a shoe,
to write a name,
to read a book,
to believe in themselves,
to dream beyond the stars.
So God made a mother.

God said, "I need someone
who will plant a garden,
sew a dress, bake a cake,
and teach a child to ride a bike,
someone who will laugh at their own mistakes
and cry at the joy and sorrow of their children."
So God made a mother.

God wanted someone
who would be there at the first breath,
and stay until the last,
someone who would never give up on their child,
no matter the cost.
So God made a mother.
